About the Hatchery

The McKinnon’s Creek hatchery, located on a spring fed stream on the south side of the Rangitata river,  was recommissioned by a group of enthusiast volunteers in 2006. Prior to this the once commercial hatchery had stood abandoned and derelict for about 15 years.

Working bees were held and over a period of 2 years, the site was restored and the hatchery rebuilt. The  hatchery is now capable of processing 1 million eggs and supplies salmon fry  and fertilized eggs to the Rangitata river and further afield when requested. The group operating the hatchery work in  conjunction with  Central SI Fish & Game and provide regular reports to them. Everyone involved is a volunteer and many thousands of voluntary hours are involved in the operation. The hatchery has had a positive impact on the sports Salmon fishery of the Central South Island,
