On Saturday 16th May, Gary Rooney of Rooney Group, invited the public to an open day at the irrigation intake on the Rangitata river to explain the working of the system and inspect the Salmon spawning race he had built in conjunction with the project. The day was well attended and speakers from Rooney Group, CSI Fish & Game, and McKinnons Hatchery addressed the crowd. The spawning race was designed by Mark Webb from Fish & Game and incorporates spawning runs and rest areas as well as habitat for juveniles'. This system will be a great boon for the salmon fishery in the Rangitata and already adult fish from McKinnons Creek hatchery have been placed in the new stream.
